Faculty and Staff
Faculty and Staff …

1. Your NetID gets you started.
Everyone new to the University is assigned a NetID – a network identifier. This is your key to many of the University’s technology services.
- Your NetID is assigned after certain payroll and other hiring paperwork has been submitted by your department/unit. You should have received a confirmation letter from UITS with your NetID. If you have not received the confirmation letter, check with your department/unit regarding the status of your payroll/hiring paperwork.
- Your NetID must be activated by you before you get access to technology services. The process of activation, which is the same for students, faculty, and staff, involves:
- Choosing a secure password – Complexity Guidelines
- Selecting and answering your Secret Questions & Answers
- Activate your NetID
- Lost or forgot your NetID? Find your NetID
- Lost or forgot your NetID password? Reset Your NetID Password.
Different Systems,
Different IDs!
Your Student Administration System ID is different, from your NetID. Keep track of both; and try to use different passwords.
2. Get familiar with the Student Administration System.
The Student Administration System is UConn’s online registration system. Instructors can plan classes, request HuskyCT courses, view class and weekly schedules, view class rosters, record mid-term and final grades. Advisors can also view information about advisees. Your ID for this system is different from your NetID.
3. Set up your office/workstation computer.
The HuskyPC is the preferred, standard personal computer for UConn faculty and staff, with either a Windows or Mac operating system, and with UConn’s standard supported software and hardware support.Typically these are ordered by your department/unit through the University’s Purchasing Department prior to your arrival on campus.
- HuskyPC Hardware Support
- If you encounter a problem with a HuskyPC, contact your departmental/unit IT support person.
- If you do not have a support person in your department, contact
the UITS Help Center at helpcenter@uconn.edu or call 860-486-4357.
- Software Support

- Internet Connection – Data Jack
- Typically, your office/workstation connection to the internet is handled by your department/unit with a request to UITS
Telecommunications & Data Networking for either installation of a new data jack or activation of an existing data jack. Contact your department/unit IT person or administrative assistant to arrange for this process.

- Internet Connection – Wireless
- The University provides wireless connectivity throughout the main campus in Storrs, the regional campuses and other University locations through the UCONN-SECURE wireless network.
- To access the UCONN-SECURE wireless network you will need a NetID, a compatible operating system and 802.11i compliant client wireless card.
- Connecting from Off Campus
- The University has installed a secure Virtual Private Networking (VPN) server to provide secure communications from sites outside of the University network (dial-up ISP, broadband ISP). VPN provides access to services that may not be accessible from the outside, such as Outlook, Windows file sharing and Library resources.
- You will need your NetID to log in to the VPN from your off-campus location.
- Please note: due to security and vulnerability issues, the University has blocked use of the Remote Desktop Protocol provided by Microsoft. Use the VPN to connect to University services from off campus locations.
4. Install SafeConnect.
SafeConnect is a required application for any computer on the UConn network. SafeConnect is part of the SecureU initiative and it protects computers on the UConn network from viruses, spyware, and operating system security vulnerabilities. Computers and networks that are adequately protected are reliable and provide a consistent user experience.
5. Get the UConn Root Certificate.
A root certificate allows you safely browse all secured UConn sites on the Internet. They also identify you to these various websites.
- Install the UConn ROOT Certificate so your browser will trust all sites secured by UConn. Otherwise, you will have to install a separate certificate for each secure UConn web site.
- UConn Root Certificate download page.
6. Access your email.
The University’s central email and calendaring services are hosted on Microsoft Exchange 2007.
